“Only history itself, real history with all its suffering and all its contradiction, constitutes the truth of music.”
—Theodor Adorno
I am a historian and ethnomusicologist from Portland, Oregon. I currently work as an assistant professor at Oregon State University in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion and the School of Visual, Performing at Design Arts. I received my MA and dual PhD in history and ethnomusicology at Indiana University.
My research sits at the intersections of sound, place, and belonging. My primary research project explores music, sound, and noise in the flooded city of Vanport, the largest housing development in the United States during World War II. I analyze the multicultural soundscape of Vanport and propose new ways of listening to the harmonies and dissonances of a pluralistic sonic commons in the United States.
